Best First Cars Under £5,000 in 2026

March 2026 · 5 min read

Buying your first car is exciting — but with so many options, it's hard to know where to start. We've put together a list of the best first cars you can buy for under £5,000 in 2026, based on what we see every day at our dealership in Gateshead.

1. Toyota Aygo (2014–2020) — From £2,500

The Aygo is the ultimate first car. Tiny insurance costs (group 1–3), incredible fuel economy (60+ mpg), and Toyota reliability means it'll run forever with basic maintenance. We regularly stock these and they fly off the lot.

2. Citroen C1 (2013–2020) — From £2,000

Essentially the same car as the Aygo (they share a platform), but often a few hundred quid cheaper. Same Toyota engine, same reliability, great value.

3. Hyundai i20 (2014–2020) — From £3,000

A bit more grown-up than the Aygo/C1, with a bigger boot and more comfortable ride. The 1.2 petrol is cheap to insure and run. 5-year manufacturer warranty often still applies on newer examples.

4. Ford Fiesta (2013–2017) — From £3,500

Britain's best-selling car for a reason. Fun to drive, cheap parts, and easy to insure in 1.0 EcoBoost form. The go-to choice for most new drivers.

5. Volkswagen Polo (2014–2018) — From £4,000

A step up in quality from the Fiesta. Solid build, refined interior, and excellent resale value. The 1.0 TSI engine is peppy and economical.

6. Vauxhall Corsa (2014–2019) — From £3,000

Cheap to buy, cheap to run, cheap to insure. Not the most exciting but incredibly practical. The 1.2 or 1.4 petrol engines are bulletproof.

7. Mazda3 (2014–2018) — From £5,000

If you've got the full £5k budget and want something that's genuinely fun to drive, the Mazda3 is the one. SKYACTIV engines are reliable and efficient, and the driving experience is a cut above everything else on this list.

💡 Tips for First-Time Buyers

  • Check insurance costs BEFORE you buy — some cars are much cheaper to insure
  • Always get an HPI check to verify the car's history
  • Look for cars with a fresh MOT and recent service
  • Buy from a dealer with warranty — it saves you if something goes wrong
  • Don't stretch your budget to the max — leave money for insurance, tax, and running costs
