Used Car Buying Guide: What to Check Before You Buy
March 2026 · 6 min read
Buying a used car should be exciting, not stressful. Whether you're a first-time buyer or upgrading your daily driver, here's everything you need to check before handing over your money.
Before You Visit
- Set your budget — include insurance, tax, and at least £500 for unexpected repairs
- Research the model — check common faults on owner forums
- Check the MOT history — free at gov.uk/check-mot-history
- Run an HPI check — verifies no outstanding finance, write-offs, or stolen flags
At the Dealership
- Walk around the car — check for dents, scratches, mismatched paint (respray = possible accident)
- Check the tyres — minimum 3mm tread for safety, all matching brand ideally
- Look under the bonnet — clean engine bay, no leaks, correct oil level
- Start it cold — listen for unusual noises, check exhaust smoke colour
- Test ALL electronics — windows, mirrors, AC, radio, lights, heated seats
The Test Drive
- Drive for at least 15 minutes on different roads
- Test brakes — should be smooth, no pulling to one side
- Check gearbox — smooth changes, no crunching or slipping
- Listen for suspension knocks over bumps
- Check steering — should be straight, no vibration at speed
Dealer vs Private
Buying from a dealer gives you legal protection under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The car must be:
- Of satisfactory quality — no hidden faults
- Fit for purpose — it must actually work as a car
- As described — the listing must be accurate
Private sales have almost no legal protection — "buyer beware" applies.
